Among each series is one coin that stands out from the rest, a coin that every collector dreams of owning. These coins are very rare and therefore come for a pretty penny.
1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar
Morgan Silver Dollars have been a fan favorite for a very long time. These coins are arguably the most popular rare coins available today.
However, there is one coin in particular that every coin collector and investor wants to get his or her hands on, which is the 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar.
The 93-S is the “King” of Morgan Silver Dollars. The “S” designates that the coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Only 100,000 of these coins were minted, which is the lowest mintage for a business-strike Morgan Silver Dollar.
The only coin that comes close is the 1894-P at 110,000.
There is no such thing as a cheap 93-S Morgan Silver Dollar. A specimen in “Good” quality will run well over $2,000 and an uncirculated piece over $100,000.
These numbers are of course for coins that are certified by a reputable grading service, but raw coins are no exception to the high price.
One Superb Gem BU example went for over $400,000 in an auction. The 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar is a “Monster Rarity” that adds tremendous numismatic value to a portfolio.
1999 Silver Eagle in Mint State 70
Silver Eagles are considered to be the “modern day Morgan Silver Dollar” by many coin enthusiasts. This modern rarity is often more affordable than classic rarities are, but some exceptions exist.
The biggest exception is the 1999 Silver Eagle in perfect condition. This means that the coin must be certified MS70 (Mint State 70) by a reputable grading service.
There were 7,408,640 Silver Eagles put out in that year, with very few perfect grade examples in existence. Only 113 have been graded MS70 by NGC as of 1/27/15 and none have ever been graded MS70 by PCGS.
This coin is worth well over $20,000 if graded MS70 by NGC due to its extreme scarcity in perfect condition.
If one was ever to be graded MS70 by PCGS, the value of the coin would be astronomical and most likely would be put up for auction.
The 1999 Silver Eagle in high grade is a key coin for a Silver Eagle collection along with the 1995 W Silver Eagle. However, that coin will be talked about in our next post about key Proof Silver Dollars.
A perfect grade 1999 Silver Eagle is every Silver Eagle enthusiast’s dream.
Bullion Shark carries an extensive selection of Morgan Silver Dollars and American Silver Eagles along with a background on each coin for investors and collectors to further their knowledge in the numismatic field.
