An art exhibition that recently opened in Macau attempts to capture the beauty and spiritual aura that makes gold so desirable.
Anne Camilli is the curator of “A Golden Way of Life – Trés’Ors” exhibition. The collection includes over 250 French gold creations and artifacts, including classic and contemporary art works, religious artifacts, vintage furniture pieces, fashion and accessories, watches and jewelry, and everyday life objects dating from the 17th century to today.
Camilli told the Macau Daily Times that gold has traditionally been used in art because of its extraordinary properties and the fact that it lasts forever. She speaks of gold in spiritual terms. She said the meaning of gold is found not only in its value and as a source of wealth, but also in its spiritual symbolism.
The everlasting nature of gold makes human beings immediately connect with their religion, whatever that might be.”
Camilli’s comments come across as somewhat eccentric and possibly laced with a bit of hyperbole. There is no denying that gold art can be mesmerizing. After all, there’s a reason people will shell out good money to go and simply gaze at golden artwork in museums and art galleries around the world. But when you boil it all down, most people are drawn to gold not because it’s pretty, or due to some kind of spiritual yearning. They want gold because they understand that it means wealth. In fact, in a very real sense, gold is money.
While the average person can only enjoy gold’s aesthetic qualities by visiting a museum or gallery, anybody can take advantage of its wealth-preserving properties.
